Objective: To build a highly responsive and scalable cause portal for Cancer Research UK in association with Channel 4 to handle high traffic transactions in order to raise over £6 million.

Challenge: This campaign was a one-day event and was assisted by a telethon simultaneously aired on television. Hence it was necessary to ensure a seamlessly responsive portal to handle the high traffic from a varied user base.

Solution: Axelerant engaged with Cancer Research UK and their partners Channel 4 via Acquia and implemented a Drupal 7 website. It was based on Adaptive Theme for responsive theming along with Panels & Media modules to handle their media assets. As the design for the website wasn’t a conventional Drupal design, we had to make a lot of custom changes to accommodate them. The website’s performance was very crucial for the project, which was why it was tested for up to 2000 page loads per second and was found satisfactory for the clients’ requirements.

Result: Stand Up To Cancer UK was able to raise £6.5 million in a single day with no service interruptions. The cause portal was delivered on time and within budget. Though this was developed for the one-day event, the client could, and has been using the same website for further fundraising endeavors as well.

Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK joined forces to bring the United Kingdom together to Stand Up To Cancer.
