Global Training Days is a quarterly event to introduce new users to Drupal. Axelerant participates with the Drupal Association for these events. From the Global Training Days page on drupal.org, “Drupal Global Training Days is an initiative by the Drupal Association to introduce new and beginning users to Drupal. The Drupal Association is partnering with training companies to make this happen. Once a quarter, free or low-cost training events will take place around the world.” This quarter, introductory training sessions were organized at Srinagar and Bangalore.

The training at Bangalore was organized by – Malabya, Mantesh, Vishnu & Hussain and the training at Srinagar was held by – Aliya, Bassam, Junaid & Sabreena. While the Srinagar event looked good a month in advance, the Bangalore event was confirmed barely a week before the training day. The event was promoted on meetup.com and Axelerant’s Facebook page, and we worked to spread the word to all interested as much as possible.
While Srinagar saw a full house with 12 attendees curious to learn, Bangalore location saw two trainees and made the best of it by giving more focused attention and answering all of their questions.

‘What is Drupal?’ began with an overview of Drupal, what it is, what it can do and trying it out on simplytest. Participants installed Drupal on their laptops and worked on building necessary parts with blocks and views. Mantesh worked with the members and gave hands-on guidance in developing the site and answering specific questions on how to use blocks, menus, views, etc…. The basics were covered within a span of 3 – 4 hours.
The event was well received, and we are hoping to reach out to more people by the next training day at the end of August. If you are interested, keep following Axelerant’s Facebook page & follow us on Twitter @Axelerant to receive updates for the training day as well as the monthly meetups.
It was really good overall. I knew most of the topics because I created a couple of websites, but It was like a brush up for me since it had been a while since I used Drupal. I am excited and want more of it. I will surely come for the coming meetups. I am looking for slightly advanced topics and also it would help me if the teaching was use case driven or if we tried to mock some existing sites. I am excited about drush which Hussain was speaking about and want to learn it, it would be nice if you taught that in the next meetup.

The training was great for all beginners and enthusiasts. These kind of workshops should be done more to build a stronger community of open source technologies.
